Under the Escapee Program, some 15,000 individuals are
registered for care and maintenanme in Europe, and by
June 1, 1953# 4709 persona had been resettled or were
awaiting passage, making a total of over 29,000 escapees
receiving assistance during fiscal year 1953. Basettlo
sent has been primarily in the United States, Canada,
Latin America and Australia. Under Section 303 (a) of
the Mutual Defense Assistance Act of 1949, as amended,
limited activities have been initiated in South Asia
and the Tar East. The program has developed material
useful for exploitation by Overseas information media
and afforded the basis for the successful rebuttal by the
United States of Czech charges in the last General Assembly
