SUPPLEMENT TO
1, It is expected that an extraordinary session of the Supreme National Council
of the Communist Party of El Salvador will be called for the purpose of
choosing a successor of Dr. Julio Fausto Fernandez as Secretary General,
Fernandez was recently named Consul General of El Salvador in Uruguay,,
2? , Dr. Jose Antonio Diaz Zalaya, a prominent. Communist,
wz most likely be named. Other possibilities are Pr. Rodolfo Jimenez
Barrios, Dr, Ricardo Jimenez Castillo, Dr.. Thony Vassiliu Hidalgo and
Joaquin Hernandez Callejas.,
3,, Jimenez Barrios and Jimenez Castillo are considered the wost capable, but
it is thought that they deviate from the Marxist line, both for their own
personal interests and in consideration of local political issues.
4~ Antonio Diaz on the other hand is rated as a practical Marxist who has fought
the others at times to maintain the international political line and he is
therefore regarded as the safest candidate for the Secretary Generalship.
Antonio Diaz acted both as a member of the Central Committee and, during
1945, as Secretary of Culture, He taught dialectical materialism at the
