Approved For Release 2007/07/25 :CIA-RDP78B04747A001000060040-7 Linear Phaeolver ~isasuring IlZgine, Cont~}act ~jill not be a pacing; item. The digital circuits are almost all built and tested and the rack wired for them. The analogue circuits are being worked on. The drive amplifi+?r and preamp which was used in phase 1 at 6~ KC is being tested at 10 Kc for se in this phas?. They are making open loop ,sin a d phase plots and will check it for stable operations aver a temps eerat ur a range of 500 F t o 1000 ~', They have alloted 4 weeks in April to ch ek out the electronics, They expect to use the old plates fcttm ph.l for the checkout so that the electronics pha e will be in good order when they go into system t st the end of April . seem to eves the program pr y we un er control, They have started Lhe electronicwark again and v,~i t13 c ontinuea z;rograss it STATINTL 0 is working on the master anal it is ue March I9+ STATINTL The master will than go to for ms~ki g the final plates.., which will take about weeks.. The? glass. plates have been com, leted by d are now aver STATINTL STATINTL at for measurement, "~~~~~"" Tf meet their dates.,. TG ex Bets to b? able to demonstrate 1 micron measuring c pability before the end of Junes. This is a little later than +..heir contract date, but they have not far:~all requestQd ~. co ract extension, The:y are, currently n the schedule that was reported in the 5th progress re ort, 12 Dec. 63 Vie diseussod some of the approaches to t e design of a prototype measuring machine using the li ear phasolver as the3 measuring engine, Tt is importan of course to retain they unique advantages of the! line r phasolvesr: a. I~To ambiguity in then reading b. Igo long train of pulses to coon c. ?vo limitatic:n on traverse rate mposed by a lead scre?~~u rate or by a cc~ untin rate;, Thtay will put some of their ideas on a er for STATINTL to consider.. They wi 11 also send ~a copy of their proposal for a i~lhitm Sands reader. They ar-~ tl netg~- Vitiation on that contract now. Declass Review by NIMA / DoD STATINTL Approved For Release 2007/07/25 :CIA-RDP78B04747A001000060040-7 J I Approved For Release 2007/07/25 :CIA-RDP78B04747A001000060040-7 BBD--4 X011 Film Dryer I arranged with ^ to see the ABD~4 work assigned their number one field service cut the machines This is stationed in Washington Dt C~ or severe Charley want over the whale machine and rollers. After the careful realignment, tracking over the output vacuum roller. the machine for one, the tracking ever th was givirg trouble. uJc ran it dry with thin base film on a r about waist high on the forward wa11 of There was a r?~11 already on the machine 300 o r 400 feet 1 of t can i t. ~e ran that troubles and it looked e.s though the tra had been cured. Then we took the full roll of about 904 it through the machines again Mistrackl ~7~19 >4 had 'man to check Hs was: years. realigned the he got good 1~h ~n he ran ~ inpu+~ roller ~ 11 er mount sd th e machinsw ?:ith about off with na yking problem cot and ran g aver the d u~ i ilry th a g00 foot run. It appeared tome that the tension on input vacuum roller occured 3 or 4 times that input spool that f sd film to the in - roller nerd ad3uetm~nt, but ws wens una e to resolve the problem at that time.. It was unfort was not availabis to comma perfarr~ance of the machine on that run c t on that ompared to ing tests. YVe ran the machine at all speeds from slOwes~ of about 5 fpm I estimate to the highest of 18~ f m which I the previous performance when. he was taro measured. I had thought that the tap speed would bs up around 25 or 30 fpt~. Caution had to be sxerciss~l when varying the speed that the input and output vacuum roll era did not get too far out of sync throw slQCk ar put excess tension on th collapse the air bearings. Collapsing t film and e air bearings w4s only a momentary problem with dry fillet, but with tacky film, it might a?~~ stick to the t The control paned of the machine was in labeled but I expect ^ will take care dsquately Approved For Release 2007/07/25 :CIA-RDP78B04747A001000060040-7 e ruary 7~, 1964 Approved For Release 2007/07/25 :CIA-RDP78B0474 Digital Readout Comparator The first unit Wass shipped to and r c~eived by them S on Monday JAn. 20: 0 has not Started' o work with this unit yet, so there are no reports o problems from the user, ~ is kn the final stages. of checking o t the second unit, They found some wiring errors -on hs boards., but on the whole it seams to be going well; They also disp covered some poor workman ship in their abler and were concerned that it was possible the abler ~or,~ the first unit had the ss~me thin wrong, Thy immediately contacted and asks him to take a look at the ca~Oles to sae if they were OR, I3ava said ha would but they have not heard from hi yet. Ths cables of coursd were working alright wh n ~ shipped S them with the unit. INTL Ths replacements for the broken ~~ s~it~h.es on the STATINTL front panel were received. did n t send a mounting bracket v+ith them, calla 0 in STATINTL Idah?, Opromised to send the brae sets air mail, ao they should arrive Monday, unit, and is technician w rking nn the the engineer e pact to finish their checkout this afternoon. The unit will tneri bs operated continuously for about 8 hours, than it goes to QC far visual ch?ck and sign off, They xpeet to ship it sometime next week, _------ ~~ They do not hav? as much info~matian rn he Optomeehanisms puled as they would like, The bast thin cf course would be for them to have a ceding heald and fE d its output to their counter. Then the~T ~~~ou~.d be su ~ them. is no problem. 2'hey don't know for example if the pulse is symmetrical, cr the rise time ot~ tn~~ lea ink; edge or the fall time of the trailing edge,: Ths inp t iffipedanee of L their count sr is FOR ohms. and they s~ssum that is adequate for the reading heath Th y would a1s~o ~ like tc be aasurcac~that the pulse height f 1 volt stays constant over the range of the counting ate. If not, how much does it vary? X11 they really now about the pulse they arc counting is thAt it is A quare wave of 1 volt peak. The previous pro~eet sngin er who started this design may have some t~f this ini'orma ion but e current people don't, S Approved For Release 2007/07/25 :CIA-RDP78B04747A001000060040-7 s~LD?4 Roll Film Dryer still has not completely solved the t a,eking problem on the output vacuum roller. The film ill run through well far a gout 5DO feet and then it star s to go off. This is pretty goad, but it doss not ps it unattended operation. I can re~ae~nbsr when I would a,vs considesred that superb pert'ormance,: as 1D mils for the outer ~ inches, but t at sti11 did tapered the ends. of the vacuum oller as ~ueh not completely salve the problsm~ altho h there waa soma improvement bs The tracxin roblem seems to fundamental to the opsr~ atic~n o ~~~ an air bearing dry sr ana ma require soma intensive investigation over a period at' time to ensure the prep sr solution. ~is considering two possibilities. Ons is to remove the ofr'ending ro:Ller and substitute an i ler rubber covered roller or an a.ir bsa.ring roller. The dancing roller will then govern the sp~sed of the take up spool to e?liminate slack instead of a metering caller T!^_e other is to put an a.ir bearing rolls immediately in t'ront cf the vacuum roller. By edges gui ing the t'ilm ors the air bearing, it will oe t'ed onto he vacuum roll sr straight and mould riot present tracking problems. Frankly, I think this problem is a prime? canaidate for an investigative preg~am. It seems tc3 m it snoula be considered jointly witnthe HT.~1~~ invests ativs program. v ~~ _:~,_ ~: Approved For Release 2007/07/25 :CIA-RDP78B04747A001000060040-7
