A. Activities of the Subcommittee During Fiscal Year
!. Review of the Intelli nce Product in the Subcommittee's Field

At a meeting on 3 April 1963, the Subcommittee reviewed the tentative
research plans of member agencies for FY 1964. This review provided the
members of the Subcommittee with an opportunity to evaluate the progress
being made to meet priority deficiencies of research and to evaluate the
state of intelligence in the Subcommittee*s field of competence.

b. Collection Deficiencies
A statement of Priority Deficiencies of Collection was forwarded
by the Subcommittee to the EIC in 1960. No changes in this statement are
under consideration by the Subcommittee at this time, but a review and updating
is planned for the coming fiscal year.

5. Maintenance of Agreed Basic Statistics
For the fourth consecutive year, the Subcommittee published a set of
agreed population estimates in EIC SR5-S3, Population of the Countries of the
Sino-Soviet".Bloc and of Cuba and Yugoslavia, Selected Years, 1938-80 April 1963.
At the meeting on 3 April, the Subcommittee reviewed a draft of this
publication prepared by the Foreign Demographic Analysis Division of the
Bureau of Census in cooperation with the office of Research and Reports of the
Central Intelligence Agency. This draft was an updated version of a similar
report published by the Subcommittee in 1960, ig61, and 1962. Coverage of the
report was expanded, however, to include estimates of the population of Cuba
and Yugoslavia. The report was forwarded for publication after being revised
in accordance with suggestions made by members of the Subcommittee.

7. Intelligence Research Techniques
The Subcommittee did not discuss intelligence research techniques during
the year.
8. Special Coordination Functions of the Subcommittee
No special coordination functions were undertaken during FY 1963.

9~ Evaluation of the Role of the Subcommittee
The Subcommittee believes that its activities provide a useful means
for coordinating the research on population and manpower within the intelligence
community and for eliminating duplication of effort. The Subcommittee also
serves a useful function in acquainting its members and their agencies
with research problems, techniques, and findings on problems of mutual concern.
R. Future Proaam of the Subcommittee
The Subcommittee plans to engage in the following major activities during
FY 1964:
1. To review the basic population statistics published by the Subcommittee
in the light of new information.
2. To continue the annual review of the tentative research plans of member
agencies in order to avoid duplication of effort.
3. To review and update its statement on collection deficiencies.
4. If appropriate, to hear and comment upon the more important substantive
reports prepared by member agencies.
