MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Additions to the RID~DDP 14011410 Systems
1. The 1401 system presently installed has a core memory capacity of
8,000 positions. Since this system is planned to be the "Inpu-t Editor" to
the Main Index it has been found that this amount of core storage i-s not
sufficient. The present edit now being accomplished on this system is
limited by core capacity. With the present 8K storage, it will not be
possible to insert the necessary program steps to process index tapes
punched in the "ALL" position on the Flexowriter nor the steps necessary
to use the card with the prepunched record number. The complete edit
program, which will also select and insert the searchable record from the
present record plus the necessary coding for printing, will require the
full complement of 16K storage.
2. The present 1410 system was ordered and installed without a
printer on the basis that the printer on the 1401 system would handle our
printing requirements for the foreseeable future. Three factors have
proven that this was a miscalculation:
a. The listing of IBM cards for the forced conversion of the 3x5
cards of the present manual index will require a large amount of printing
time"that was not foreseen.
b. The printer has not been available for. use during the straight
processing operations on the 1401. While the printer is not being used on
an overtime basis, the main frame is averaging over 100 hours of overtime
use per month.
c. The debugging procedures on the 1410 have been greatly compli-
cated by not having an on-line printer. An extra tape drive has been used
to record the program and then shifted to the 1401 for printing. With the
amount of debugging expected in the future, this will become an increasing
difficulty.
3. We have always intended that both the Files Section of RID, as
well as the Abstract Unit of the ADP Branch, would have direct access to
the ~-System. In the old buildings only the Abstract Unit had an
inquiry station on the 650, distance and cable costs obviating an inquiry
station in the Files Section. We have already ordered one Remote Jnqu:Lry

unit for the 1410, and now find, with the move, that installation of a
second unit in the Files Section is feasible since only two pairs of
telephone wires are required far each remote station. (Note: Telephone
line costs for these installations have not been determined. This will
be done as soon as we obtain complete installation details from IBM.)
4. It is recommended that the following be accomplished:
a. Request additional 8K storage to be installed on the 101 as
soon as possible at a cost of $1,025.00 per month.
b. A 1403 printer be ordered for the 1410 system, with installa-
tion as soon after 1 July 1962 as possible. This will cost $775.OO~month
for the printer and $610.OO~month for the necessary adapters. (This
printer will probably be replaced by a 1404 printer when it is available
for this system.)
c. A second Remote Inquiry unit be ordered for the 1410, with
installation as soon as possible after 1 July 1962. The cost will be
$200.00 monthly, plus telephone line coats.
5. The above costs are all in line with and represented in present
and future budget estimates.
