NAN-CHIU SHAN IS LOCATED IN THE EAST CHINA
SEA APPROXIMATELY 20 NM EAST OF THE MAIN-
LAND AT 2925N 12211E.

OPERATING IN THE L-BAND IMMEDIATELY BELOW
1300 MEGAHERTZ. ALTHOUGH THE PRIMARY
FUNCTION OF THIS RADAR IS EARLY WARNING IT
COULD POSSIBLY BE USED FOR GROUND CONTROLLED
INTERCEPT. ESTIMATES OF THE CAPABILITY OF
CROSS LEGS INDICATE THAT IN THE EARLY WARNING
ROLE THE MAXIMUM UNAMBIGUOUS RANGE IS 400 NM
WHILE OPERATING IN THE LOWER PRF (PULSE
REPETITION FREQUENCY) MODE, AND 130 NM WHILE
OPERATING AT THE HIGHER PRF.
MOON FACE RADAR, IS A CHICOM VARIANT OF THE
US WORLD WAR II VINTAGE SCR-270 DA EARLY
WARNING RADAR. MOON FACE SIGNALS WERE
FORMERLY IDENTIFIED BY THE INDICATOR BE 04.

SECTION OF THE ISLAND AT 29-25-10N 122-26-25E CONSISTS OF ONE PROBABLE
CROSS LEGS RADAR AND ONE CONTROL/SUPPORT BUILDING. NUMEROUS CAVE ENTRANCES
ARE LOCATED ALONG THE WESTERN EDGE OF THE ISLAND. NO MISSILES OR MISSILE -
RELATED ACTIVITY IS OBSERVED,
