1. SIGNIFICANCE:
THIS BRIEFING BOARD DEPICTS A NEWLY IDENTIFIED RAIL FERRY CROSSING
OVER THE SONG LO (RIVER) AT VIET TRI, JUST WEST OF THE DESTROYED VIET
TRI RAILROAD AND HIGHWAY BRIDGE
2. BACKGROUND:
THE VIET TRI RAILROAD AND HIGHWAY BRIDGE, LOCATED APPROXIMATELY
THIRTY NM NORTHWEST OF HA NOI, ACCOMMODATES THE PRINCIPAL HIGHWAY (ROUTE
2) AND THE ONLY RAIL ROUTE BETWEEN HA NOI/HAI PHONG AND YUNNAN PROVINCE
IN SOUTH CHINA. WITH THE DESTRUCTION OF THIS BRIDGE BY U.S. AIR STRIKES
IN JUNE 1966 (THREE SPANS DESTROYED, ONE SPAN SEVERELY DAMAGED), THROUGH
RAIL TRAFFIC BETWEEN LAO CAI AND THE HA NOI/HAI PHONG COMPLEX WAS
STOPPED.
3. MISSION READOUT:
RAIL SPURS UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN THE VICINITY OF THE DESTROYED RAILROAD
AND HIGHWAY BRIDGE AT VIET TRI.
RAIL SPUR (1): A COMPLETED RAIL SPUR EXTENDS SOUTH THEN EAST FROM
THE MAIN HA NOI/LAO CAI RAIL LINE AT UTM WJ457551, PARALLELING THE NORTH
BANK OF THE RIVER, AND TERMINATING AT UTM WJ464551.

RAIL SPURS (2) AND (3): FLOOD WATERS HAVE TEMPORARILY INTERRUPTED
CONSTRUCTION ON TWO RAIL SPURS WHICH EXTEND SOUTH FROM THE MAIN LINE
AT THE SAME POINT AS SPUR (1) AND TERMINATE ON THE NORTH BANK OF THE
RIVER AT UTM wJ458549 AND UTM WJ459549.
RAIL SPUR (4): ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE SONG LO (RIVER) ANOTHER
RAIL SPUR UNDER CONSTRUCTION IS INUNDATED. THIS SPUR EXTENDS WEST THEN
NORTHWEST FROM THE MAIN LINE AT UTLI WJ475541 TO TIIE SOUTH BANK OF THE
RIVER AT UTM WJ461547.
RAIL SPUR (5): A FIFTIi RAIL SPUR IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION WHICH
EXTENDS NORTHWEST FROM THE MAIN LINE AT TtIE SAKE POINT AS SPUR (4),
GENERALLY PARALLELS THE MAIN LINE TO UTM WJI:66549 WHERE IT IS INTER-
MITTENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION WEST-SOUTHWEST TO ITS TERMINUS AT UTM
61.1462545. TRI1CK ?LAG BEEN LAID FROM THE RAIN LINE TO UT-1 WJ486547.
PONTOON HIGHWAY BRIDGE SECTIONS ARE OBSERVED ON BOTH BANKS OF THE
RIVER, WEST OF THE DESTROYED RAILROAD AND HIGHWAY BRIDGE.
THE RAIL NETWORK AT VIET TRI:
A SHORT RAIL SPUR EXTENDS NES1' FROM SPUR (1) AT U'TM WJ463551 TO A
SERVICEABLE FERRY SLIP ON THE NORTH BANK OF THE RIVER AT UTM WJ462550.
RAIL SPUR (1) IS UNDERGOING REALIGNMENT IN THE VICINITY OF UTM WJ460550.
RAIL SPURS (2) AND (3) REMAIN INUNDATED. CONSTRUCTION HAS RESUMED
ON SPUR (4). A REALIGNMENT NEAR THE TERMINUS OF RAIL SPUR (5) EXTENDS

TO A SERVICEABLE RAIL FERRY SLIP ON THE SOUTH BANK OF THE RIVER.
TWO POSSIBLE TRAMWAY CABLE ANCHORAGES ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION ON
THE SOUTH APPROACH OF THE DESTROYED RAILROAD AND HIGHWAY BRIDGE.
A PONTOON BRIDGE IS LOCATED WEST OF THE DESTROYED BRIDGE WHERE
PONTOON SECTIONS WERE OBSERVED ON THE JULY PHOTOGRAPHY. TWO TRUCKS
ARE OBSERVED ON THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY NORTH OF THE BRIDGE.
4. SUBSEQUENT COVERAGE:
REVEALS THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
TRACK HAS APPARENTLY BEEN LAID ON THE SECTION OF REALIGNMENT OF
RAIL SPUR (1).
SPUR (2), WHILE STILL PARTIALLY FLOODED, HAS A SECTION OF EMPLACED
TIES. A PROBABLE PILE DRIVER, CONSTRUCTING WHAT WILL PROBABLY BE
ANOTHER RAIL FERRY SLIP, IS OBSERVED NEAR THE TERMINUS OF THIS SPUR.
RAIL SPUR (3) REMAINS UNDER WATER.
TRACK IS OBSERVED ON SPUR (4) FROM THE SOUTH BANK OF THE RIVER AT
UTM WJ462547 TO THE LIMIT OF PHOTOGRAPHIC COVERAGE AT UTM WJ468542.
SPUR (5) IS COMPLETE AND OPERATIONAL.
