UNUSUAL CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE
ALEYSK ICBM COMPLEX,
USSR
LAUNCH SITES 19 AND 20 SHOW A DISTINCT DEVIATION
FROM STANDARD TYPE IIIC CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES.
2. LOCATION:
COMPLEX -- 151 NM SOUTH OF NOVOSIBIRSK AND GENERALLY
WEST OF THE TOWN OF ALEYSK.
SITE 19 -- APPROXIMATELY 21 NM WEST OF ALEYSK.
SITE 20 -- APPROXIMATELY 22 NM WNW OF ALEYSK.
3. REMARKS: THE ALEYSK ICBM COMPLEX IS ONE OF 6 ICBM COMPLEXES
IN THE USSR AT WHICH TYPE IIIC DEPLOYMENT HAS BEEN
IDENTIFIED. THE TYPE IIIC LAUNCH SITE IS THE
LARGER OF THE 2 TYPES OF DEPLOYED SINGLE-SILO LAUNCH
SITES WHICH HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED IN THE USSR.
NORMALLY, DURING THE EARLY STAGE OF CONSTRUCTION OF
A TYPE IIIC SITE, A SILO EXCAVATION 20 TO 30 FT DEEP
IS VISIBLE, WITH ONE OR 2 EARTHEN RAMPS PROVIDING
ACCESS INTO THE EXCAVATION. THE SPOIL FROM THIS
EXCAVATION IS UTILIZED IN FORMING A LARGE RECTANGULAR

PATTERN AT THE SIDE OF THE EXCAVATION AND A SQUARE
PATTERN, IN LINE WITH THE RECTANGULAR PATTERN, ON
THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE EXCAVATION. ONCE THE
DESIRED DEPTH IS REACHED, SILO CORING BEGINS. (GMAIC-

9. MISSION READOUT: LAUNCH SITES 19C AND 20C SHOW A DISTINCT DEVIA-
TION FROM STANDARD TYPE IIIC CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES. AT BOTH SITES ONLY
A 30-35 FT DIAMETER CORING IS OBSERVED, DUG NOT AT THE BOTTOM OF A LARGE
EXCAVATION, BUT RATHER RIGHT AT GROUND LEVEL. THIS PROCEDURE WOULD REQUIRE
HEADWORKS TO BE CONSTRUCTED ABOVE GROUND LEVEL UNLESS A LARGER EXCAVATION
IS COMPLETED AROUND THE HOLE. AT SITE 19 A CRANE IS AT THE EDGE OF THE HOLE,
AND AT SITE 20 A POSSIBLE CRANE IS AT THE EDGE. BOTH SITES REMAIN IN AN
EARLY STAGE OF CONSTRUCTION.

should be restricted to the particular briefing board(s) they were prepared for and must be considered valid only for the re-
porting period as indicated by the date of issue. For information concerning these notes contact Chief, Collateral Support
