T h e Abakan/Chernogorsk Industrial Complex has diverse industrial activity, including mining, ore processing, probable State Reserves storage, and considerable manufacturing. There is one small complex which does not appear to be consonant with any usual industrial activity, and for that reason and no other the possibility is put forward that it might be connected in some way with nuclear energy. There are two separate areas, each bounded by a single board fence. Within one enclosure there is a tall building measuring about 55 feet long and 20 feet wide, contiguous to a long low building 220 feet long and 55 feet wide, with three rows of vents on top. The enclosed area measures about 1300 feet long by 400 feet wide and contains several other buildings. The other enclosure is triangular in shape, approximately 1400 feet by 1250 feet, with an irregular hypotenuse formed by the bank of a branch of the Abakan River. Within this enclosure are several buildings, three of which are distinctive. One is a tall, square building measuring about 150 feet on a side. Near it is another structure that resembles a double vertical test cell, but appears too large for such purposes. It measures about 65 feet long and 30 feet wide, with two apertures about 25 feet square. The third building is about 230 feet long and 55 feet wide, with TOP SECRE~~ Approved For Release 2007/07/25 : CIA-RDP78TO5693A000300030025-0 Approved For Release 2007/07/25 : CIA-RDP78TO5693A000300030025-0 V : Ui' . :`i ^ZP T ODE - 4049 PAR - 179-57 DATE OF INFO: 22 August 1957 31 August 1957 Page 3 of , b. ABAKAN AIRFIELD 530 45' N - 91? 23' E This small sod airfield measures about 4800 feet long by 3300 feet wide. There are two aircraft, probable Mules, on the field. The field is located about two nautical miles (nm) NW of Abakan, on the road to Chernogorsk. c. CHERNOGORSK 530 48' N - 910 13' E This city shows considerable industrial development; among other installations there is a large storage area, probably for State Reserves. 2. AYAGUZ-URUMCHI RAIL LINE SURVEY 45? 50' N - 810 45' E Along the southern edge of Lake Ala Kul, near the USSR- SINKIANG border, there is construction under way probably for the bed of a railroad. Only a short stretch is under construction, but survey lines can be traced leading off in each direction therefrom. TOP SECRETI Approved For Release 2007/07/25 : CIA-RDP78TO5693A000300030025-0
