1. ODE - 2040 arrived aeon 18 October 1957 at 1140.
Z. Photography is of excellent quality considering the extremely low sun
angle, Heavy cloud cover was encountered only at start of the mission prior to
penetration of the USSR. The first USSR landfall was in the vicinity of Litskiye
Ostreva (68?38'N- 37?451E). Medium cloud cover partially obscured portions
of the Kola Peninsula coast,however, for the remainder of the run only limited
scattered clouds were encountered. No malfunction.
SUMMARY:
The amount of activity disclosed by this preliminary study would be of
great interest in almost any area. It is of particular interest in this extreme
northwest section of the USSR located entirely above the Arctic Circle.
Ten major airfields were covered, pf which four are new. Aircraft on
these ten fields total 132 bombers, Z35 fighters, and 5 transports.
Shipping in this area included 47 submarines, 36 Destroyers, 5 Destroyer.
Escortsn 69 PT boats, Al Patrol Craft, 5 Cruisers, 15 minesweep-type, and 3
Cargo ships. In addition, two subrparftie pens. drydocks and floating drydocks
were seen.
Railroad, road, and building construction is much in evidence ~d"ghout

taxiway and two parking aprons approximately 1200 by 100 feet. No aircraft
visible. Kil'Din Seaplane Station appeared inactive.

Nine submarines measuring 210 to 240 feet in length. Three probable
Destroyer Escort, two measuring 240 feet long with deck covered by a canopy,
one measuring 295 feet. One submarine pen measuring 350 by 110 feet.

(83 feet) and one Destroyer (435 feet). One probable submarine pen under con-
struction measuring 500 by 330 feet.

Small port with several small unidentified craft, one cargo vessel
approximately 420 feet in length. There appear to be several radar sites in the
area.
8. TOROS AREA

Six PT Boats, one possible Destroyer Escort (300 feet), and three
unidentified craft.
9. POLYARNYY
69? 12' N - 330 30' E
This submarine supply base is marked by considerable activity. There
are twenty-four submarines present including nine "W" class, five "Z" class,

class. Also in this area are twenty Kronshtadt patrol craft and other miscell-
aneous service craft. It appears that all entrances to anchorage and dock areas
are protected by submarine nets.
10. OLENYA BAY

Small submarine base, containing nine submarines and seven PT Boats.

Shipping in the Vayenga area includes three Cruisers (665-685 feet),
ninteen Destroyers eight Destroyers (335 feet), one Tanker (320 feet), 25X1
and many small unidentified craft.
12. NEW NAVAL BASE
69? 03' N - 33? 14' E
This new Naval Base is located adjacent to the former site of the
Varlmamova West Airfield. It appears to be a minesweep modification and/or
repair facility. It contains fifteen minesweep-type ships, three PT Boats, one
patrol craft, and various service craft. It also contains a floating drydock
