MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, Geographic Research Area,, ORE
FROM: Acting ;Chief, Geography Division
SUBJECT: Requirements for Automatic Data Processing (ADP)
REFERENCE: Memorandum of 15 April 1965 from SA/RR, with
attachments
1. On-Going Programs

The Geography Division is being supported on a continuing basis
by the ADP facilities operated by the Office of Computer Services, NPIC,
the Special Register of the Office of Central Reference., and the Machine
Division of the Office of Central Reference. These facilities are being
utilized to retrieve current information on various specified areas of
the USSR. The information provided by these facilities is an essential
and timely input into the' intelligence map (collation) program on the
USSR.
OCS provides a machine list by geographic coordinates of the
NPIC "Blip File." This file lists and describes installations of intel-
ligence significance and provides references to selected intelligence
reports and photo a h on the installations. NPIC provides a list of
all PI reports, by coordinates. NPIC also furnishes
5x8 card copies of target descriptions of intelligence targets. SR
lists and keys the mappable information derived from codeword documents
to the settlements within the specified area. Graphics Register provides
(through the Machine Division) a list and brief description of all ground
photography that falls within the specified area. The Machine Division
has also been asked to provide a machine list of USSR place names organized
by coordinates.
Projection of Requirements
a. The intelligence map program has an additional requirement
which has already been identified for future consideration by the CHIVE
project. The requirement is for a system whereby the evaluated data
compiled by the intelligence map program can be stored, retrieved as
required, and updated as new intelligence becomes available.

SUBJECT: Requirements for Automatic Data Processing (ADP)
b. We anticipate that the requirement for machine-retrievable
information on Communist China will probably increase during the next five
years. The intelligence map program is beginning to include the area of
Communist China. We understand that OCS, NPIC, and the Machine Division
are probably able to provide support on this new area with their present
systems of information retrieval, but the Special Register will need to
bolster up its capability to store and retrieve information on Communist
China. The Machine Division is currently working on a limited phase of
the problem of machine listing Chinese place names by coordinat0s.:..
c. A review of the record management problems of the Geography
Division has just begun., The numbers and types of reporting and the range
of information required are being analyzed to determine whether efficient
handling in an ADP system is feas2.1 A9a
