SUBJECT: ADP Support Requirements for FY 1966-70
1. Current Projects
a. Map Information System
Microfilming in D/GL of both current acquisitions and
backlog, with associated card punching by OCR/MD, has been
underway since March 15, 1965. ADP support currently required
includes:
(1) OCR/MD punching from transcript sheets essential
bibliographic information for D/GL loan copy maps --
punching for current acquisitions will continue indefinitely;
punching for production of machine records and production
of aperture cards for backlog material will, from present
estimates, extend well into the FY 1966-70 time frame. Com-
pletion of backlog processing may come in 1969-70.
(2) OCS production of punched 35mm Mil-D aperture cards
by computer from master card decks punched by OCR/MD.
Estimates of current and backlog time frames are the same
as for punching given above 1.a.(1).
(3) production of multilith masters on EAM equipment
by OCR/MD from master punched card decks, from which PSD
will print two biweekly acquisitions lists and 3x5 catalog
cards. These operations relate only to current acquisitions;
thus, they will continue indefinitely. Final design of these
programs is almost completed and production should start in
late April 1965.
b. Evaluations
It is anticipated that the development of a capability
for viewing the entire loan copy collection of maps at Langley,
with the added potential for reproducing quick copies on the

reader-printer, will benefit many present and future map users.
It will provide an entirely new service. The capability will
be developed to provide similar services at satellite locations,
perhaps of a more limited and specialized nature. During the
filming project significant quantities of hard copy maps already
in photographic or photostat form are being destroyed, thus
creating additional much-needed space for expansion of all
holdings in 159-E.
Benefits from the creation of machinable records of map
holdings will include greater flexibility in handling records
and capability for machine recall of bibliographic information
in forms impossible to attain by manual methods.
2. Projection FY 1966-70
In addition to those ADP support items of a continuing
nature described in 1. above, several additional levels of
support have been discussed. Priority and economic feasibility
studies will be required to finalize these projects; however,
at least some of them will probably be required in this five
year time period.
a. Product Requirements
Anticipated projects basically cover the production of
specialized listings and bibliographies from machine records,
i.e., punched cards, either directly from the cards utilizing
EAM equipment in OCR/MD, or from punched cards directly or
through use of tape utilizing OCS computer equipment. Choice
of equipment in any specific case will depend upon technical,
economic and priority considerations. Anticipated support
requirements:
(1) production of "book catalogs", i.e., complete
listings of map holdings in book form arranged by area,
subject, publisher,or other forms to replace current 3x5
card files;
(2) specialized customer oriented bibliographies of
map holdings, e.g., series listings, base map listings,
area/subject arrangements, etc., most of which would have
greatest value in field installations;
(3) specialized listings of area coverage arranged
by publisher for use in the inter-agency map collection
program.
b. Equipment Requirements
Purchase, lease, or time sharing of certain types of
equipment for use in card duplicating and handling will have
to be considered during the next five years. We are not deep

enough into the map information system to state with any
certainty that these items are in the offing; however, they
should be noted for planning purposes.
There will unquestionably be requests for complete or
partial duplication by in-house and community users of the
aperture cards. Complete duplication would require access to
automated or semiautomated card duplication equipment.
Although present costs of shelf equipment along these lines
would appear to be prohibitive for this use alone, it is
certain that improved items at lower cost will be developed
in the near future, and that a system of sharing such equipment
could be effected.
There are already indications that EAM equipment
modified for mechanical handling of 35mm aperture cards will
be necessary. Hopefully, only modifications of available EAM
items will meet this requirement. Further study will be
necessary.
Equipment for automated storage and retrieval of Mil-D
aperture cards is being built to handle engineer drawing
systems, e.g., Redstone Arsenal. Study during the next few
years of the rate of use of aperture card files established
by D/GL will determine how far we can go in this equipment area.
At present, justification is lacking, and costs are prohibitive.
Consideration will be given during FY 1966 to sharing
or leasing at least semiautomated card mounting equipment.
This requirement will be determined by the rate of filming.'
At present, manual card mounting can be done at a pace compati-
ble with the filming rate.
Several meetings have been held with CHIVE personnel
in the past six months to investigate possible D/GL input for
the CHIVE system. ISC and D/GL subject and area coding systems
have been studied, and mutually acceptable means for achieving
compatibility have been reached. Requirements for data handling
support and equipment will necessarily be determined by CHIVE
at such time as D/GL input is to be seriously considered.
