Aroved For Releas'100 Memorandum TO : D/OBI THRU EA/OBI ,FROM : DCh/CD/BI SUBJECT: Release of Maps to Universities DATE: 19 August 1966 1. The Cartography Division's relations with Universities has always been on a very limited basis and has consisted mainly in donating selected unclassified maps to a few (less than 10) University Geography Departments. This activity has been conducted within the framework of a policy set forth several years ago. (See Attachment A) 2. Subject maps have been treated in two categories: a. Finished intelligence, e.g., USSR-Railroads. b. Samples of technical cartography, e.g., Color pull of a terrain plate. 3. In all cases, giving maps to Universities has been considered directly or indirectly beneficial to the Cartography Division either in the form of special academic training for Agency employees or evaluations and recommendations of prospective employees. 4. In addition to those maps given to Universities by former Chief, CD/RR - reported separately by EA/OBI - only two other instances have taken place. 25X1A5a1 5. Judicious distribution of maps to Universities and other research institutions on an automatic basis has been the subject of many staff discussions over the past years. No change in the present policy is recommended at this time. It should be pointed out, that any elaborate change, however beneficial, would incur a significant cost factor and would strain manpower resources in the Cartography Division. 25X1A9a Approved For Release 2000/04/17 : CIA-RDP79-011 79-011 53 4dbO100050033-0 53Ai 50033-0 dowagradind ad declassification
