Pakistani Attempts to Hij -k Swissair Jetliner
A Pakistani youth hijacked a Swissair DC-8 aircraft en
route from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Geneva on 2 December. The
young man, who boarded the jetliner in Colombo armed with a toy
pistol, told the pilot to fly to either Beirut or Tripoli. The
pilot convinced the hijacker the aircraft was low on fuel and
landed at the Karachi airport, where Pakistani authorities
overpowered the youth. The hijacker's motivation is not known.

Sheraton Hotel Attacked.
Leftwing university students
attacked the U.S.-owned
Sheraton Hotel with firebombs
and rocks, causing extensive
damage. No injuries or ar-
rests were reported by the
police. Police said the stu-
dents came from earlier demon-
strations, on the engineering
school campus, against na-
tional educational policy
changes. Some of the students
shouted epithets against the
Chilean regime. The Sheraton
is operated by an ITT sub-
sidiary, and ITT activities
in Chile have received much
unfavorable international
publicity, but it is not clear
that this was the reason for
the attack. (UNCLASSIFIED)

Archbishu Capucci Sentenced by Israelis
On 9 December an Israeli court convicted the Greek Cath-
olic Archbishop of Jerusalem, Hilarien Capucci, Of smuggling
arms to Fatah guerrillas in Israel, and ,sentenced him to 12
years in prison. The court rejected a plea that Capucci be
given a suspended sentence, according to the press. He has 45
days to appeal the verdict, and there is speculation that he
will be deported before completing the sentence. Greek Catholic
leaders, the governments of Syria and Lebanon, and the Palestine
Liberation Organization (PLO) have publicly criticized the
sentence. The Vatican has not yet commented. A PLO spokesman
stated that no effort will be spared to rescue Capucci. (Capuc-
ci's arrest, indictment and trial were reported In the issues
of 28 August, 11 September and 25 September,) (UNCLASSIFIED)

Private Plane Hijacked from Florida to Cuba
A lone gunman hijacked a twin-engine Piper Seneca plane
in Tampa the night of 14 December and forced the pilot to fly
him to Cuba, according to press stories. The plane landed in
Havana at about 10:30 p.m. The hijacker, a middle-aged man
using the name Robin Harrison, had chartered a single-engine
aircraft from the Tampa Flying Service, but when he arrived
at the airport he pulled a pistol and demanded the larger
plane. The pilot, who returned to Miami on 16 December,
said Cuban authorities took the hijacker into custody. They
treated the pilot well, but the Tampa Flying Service was re-
quired to pay $500.00 to the Cuban government before the
pilot was permitted to leave. This is the first hijacking
to Cuba since the signing of a treaty in February 1973 which
requires Cuba to return U.S. hijackers or put them on trial.

Air India Flight Crew Overpowers Hijacker
A naturalized Canadian citizen hijacked an Air India (AI)
Boeing 747 jetliner with 151 passengers and 19 crew members on
25 December as the aircraft was flying over Athens on its way
to Rome. The AT flight had originated in Bombay on 24 December
and had scheduled stops in Beirut and Rome with New York as its
final destination. According to press accounts, the hijacker
entered the cabin of the aircraft armed with a small knife and

demanded that the pilot land in Rome, that a pistol be delivered
to him and that Italian authorities grant him passage to a des-
tination of his choice. He also told the pilot bombs had been
planted on the aircraft. The hijacker told the pilot to fly
over St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome to verify the aircraft's
location. At this point he told the pilot to crash into the
center of the city. The copilot, flight engineer and two other
crew members then jumped the hijacker and subdued him.
The man was subsequently identified as Josef Homolov of
Ontario, Canada, who had immigrated from Czechoslovkia in 1968.
He told Italian authorities he hijacked the plane because there
were people on board who intended to rob him. Italian authori-
ties stated Homolov was carrying $2,000 in counterfeit Canadian
currency. No explosives were discovered. Homolov is being
held by the Italian authorities on charges of hijacking and
conspiracy to commit currency fraud. At present there is no
indication that Homolov is connected with any terrorist organi-
zation. (UNCLASSIFIED)

Deportation from Israel of Two French Saboteurs
Two French women, Evelyn Barage and Marilyn (Marlene)
Bardali, who were convicted by Israeli authorities in April
1971 for possession of explosives, were released and deported
from Israel on 20 December. According to a Jerusalem press
report, the Israeli prisons commissioner emphasized that the
reduction of their sentences of 10 and 14 years was not the
result of the recent visit of the French foreign minister but
rather resulted from requests initiated by their families.
(See the 6 November issue.) The two women, who were members
of the French branch of the Popular Front for the Liberation
of Palestine, and three other Europeans who have already been
deported were planning acts of sabotage in several large Is-
raeli hotels. Barage had executed the sabotage of the Gulf
oil refinery in Rotterdam in March 1971 and participated in
the hijacking of a Pan American jumbo jetliner in September
1970. Bardali was a suspected hijacker. (UNCLASSIFIED)

Lebanese Sentence Frenchman to Death for Aiding_ Israeli
Commandos
. On 21 December a Lebanese military court sentenced French-
man Pierre Fernand Rongier to death on charges of spying for
Israel and aiding the Israeli commandos who attacked fedayeen
leaders and installations in Beirut on 10 April 1973. (See
the issues of 11 and 25 April 1973.) Although Rongier denied
the charges, the prosecutor said there was irrefutable evi-
dence of Rongier's role, including the testimony of witnesses
and five false passports seized from him. He is believed to
have assisted in renting cars used in the Israeli attacks.
Rongier was not seized at the time of the attacks, according
to the Beirut press, but was arrested in July 1974 when he
arrived in Beirut, ostensibly on a business trip, from Saudi
Arabia. Rongier's defense lawyers said the death sentence
would be appealed. (UNCLASSIFIED)
