Approved Foo lease WAM, t DP78B04771001700060024-3 S 003 19 May 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, Research & Engineering Division, TSSG/NPIC SUBJECT: IAS Comments on New Focusing System for Chip Comparator Although substantive imagery analysis requirements have pre- cluded a thorough evaluation of the new focusing system, operational use by four IAS PIs has brought forth subjective comments worth noting. (1) Without question the new mechanism permits more precise focusing, but (as per our discussion) there is an obvious need for a different handwheel; one with enough friction to overcame the self- induced rotation now exhibited on occasion. (2) Another apparent shortcoming of the modification is the instability of the viewing head. Even the slightest physical contact, with the eyepieces for example, causes the image to jiggle. In fact, quiver is quite noticeable when either of the translating motors is in operation. While we may be able to tolerate this deficiency, im- proved stability is considered desirable. 25 Technical Advi r .or, IAS Declass Review by NGA.
