1. was visited on 13 November to
discuss the d.o. of Project #02318, Alignment Device for Stereoviewers, and
to become acquainted with their facility. I
Vice President of the company, was contacted.
2. is about five years old, occupies the back end
of a building in and employs approximately 40
people. Of this total employment, about 30 are in the production area and
the remainder in engineering, mana ement and supporting groups. The engineer.
ing and design group includes and two or three design and drafting
personnel. The very few designs observed during the visit that were produced
by this group appeared to be straight-forward problems with straight-forward
solutions.
3. The shop facility is fairly extensive in floor area and numbers of
machines. Age of the machines, and presumably quality and accuracy, would
appear to vary rather widely. Included are about fifteen lathes of various
sizes (with two or three turret lathes), a dozen milling machines (none taped,
although one is being considered), three grinding machines (one of which is
centerless), and two or three drilling machines.
4. A sheet metal department includes six or eight brakes and shears of
various sizes. The welding area is capable of the usual hand operations plus
Heliarc. However, welding aluminum is not a capability. This facility does
not seem suited to quantity fabrication. A rather messy-looking glass-forming
facility, which includes a lathe, is probably of somewhat limited capability.
An inspection area appeared to consist of a screen projection comparator and
a hand micrometer, although other unseen instruments could have been in cabi-
nets. Paint spray equipment included a fairly large spray painting enclosure,
a spray booth, and an oven. An assembly area and a shop foreman's enclosure
completed the shop facility.

5. The company is presently subcontracting part of a film printer for
a color printer drive for 0 builds some light tables fo
r
one of the military services, a portable viewing device, and some other mis-
cellaneous jobs. The quality of machine work appears to be good. Production
tolerances of .0003 are within their capability although they admittedly would.
have to use care in choosing a machine and machinist to produce this accuracy.
The production of castings, or larger fabrications such as weldments of machine
bases, is beyond their capability.
6. The company appears to be a possible source for the production of
smaller machined parts and assemblies, sheet metal work of about any size we
may be interested in, and limited glass-forming work. Any of their facilities
would be available for work in jobbing quantities.
7. is interested in the Alignment Device for Steree-
viewers and intends to submit a proposal. I expressed interest in
being contacted in the future for similar types of developments.
