STAT This progress report covers the period from November 15, 1965 to February 15, 1966. Expenditures The average expenditure rate thus far has been about 0 per month; this is slightly less than the estimated rate of per month for the total duration of the project. However, during the three-month period from October 31, 1965 to January 31, STAT 1966, the average monthly expenditure was The increased STAT expenditure rate was due to the fact that two major studies were started and a third study was completed during the reporting period. If the data collection phases of the current studies--mensu- ration and missile site readout--could be completed on schedule, the contract could also be completed on schedule. However, it is evident now that data collection on the mensuration study cannot be completed in accordance with the original schedule. Because of conflicts with operational requirements, we have been unable to obtain access either to the experimental subjects or the necessary measuring equipment. Furthermore, we have been supplied with additional photographs of thelI model and hope to complete studies of the relative worth of stereoscopic versus monoscopic viewing and of mixed quality stereoscopic pairs. Naturally, we will make an effort to accomplish as much as possible between now and our current termination date in the event the contracting agency chooses not to extend the contract. Progress Mensuration Study. Thus far, seven of the twenty-five GEMS being used in the mensuration study have been measured. It is taking one week for all six subjects to measure each GEM; thus it appears that data collection will continue for another eighteen weeks. The computer program has been completed, and some of the data analyses are being done as the data are being gathered. However, additional analyses will be required once the entire data collection has been completed. We plan to prepare an informal progress report after approxi- mately half of the GEMS have been measured. Missile Study. A pretest of the missile study was conducted during the week of February 14, 1966 using four missile expert PIS. The resulting data were reviewed by three I.A.s.X___ At this point the technique used looks promising. However, we have not as yet solved the problem of attaching meaningful numbers to the PIs' responses. Obliquity-scale Constant Study. A study of the effects of obliquity angle with scale held constant was completed during the period covered by this progress report. A briefing covering the results of it and two previous studies was given on the third floor during the week of February 14, 1966. The report of the third study is currently being prepared.
