1. The Plans &W Development staff has received an ;}dvanced
Rhomboid tAttacb ent for the 70 Stereomicroscope
developed under contract with the
Although the attachment ecmpletely meets the design
goals and extends the life and usefulness of the existing Zoom 70
microscopes, it is our position that the basic design of the
instrument c.n be considerably improved.
2. Specifically,, the present external configuration should be
slightly changed to permit complete rotation of the Zoom 70 within
its support ring. This re-design would allow more versatile utiliza-
tion of the instrument.
3. The second, or advuaced, model should also include a sliding
reflecting prism. This would permit the photo-interpreter to simply
slide this prt n out of the optical putt-, so that the Zoom 70 could
then be used in the monoscopic mode without the necessity of removing
the rhomboids.
4. Another improvement that should be considered is the addition
of removable objective lenses which could increase the magnification
from 2x to 3x. If this could be accomplished it would further extend
the useful life of the basic stereomicroscope at a minor increase
in cost.
5. The time for delivery of -t-nr.f (PNodel II) prototype,
with these improvements ;road be about ono' rear. Therefore, this
time factor should be t.a1Cen into conaiderati when deciding upon the
number of units of the went , ttachment , purchase.

1. It is requested that copies of the enclosed engineering
drawings entitled "Adva eed Rhomboid Prototype" be sent to the
organizations listed on the enclosed sheet. Those ct+r nizationa
which are interested in building production q amities may submit
proposals any time before 25 Ferry 1 .
2. The request for bid should prohibit the bidder fron using
the enclosed drawings for purpose other than the preparation of 'AM this bid and the drawings should be regd.
3. Bids should be solicited for the following production

The following specifications are to be met in conjunction
with the Zoom 70 Stereomicroscope on which the
rhomboid attachment will be used.
1. Resolution of 300 LP/NM or greater
2. Rhomboid magnification of 2X

3. Field of view of one-half of the values listed on
page 10 of the catalog # 53-70-01-01
4? Optical performance (aberrations) will be consistent with
the Zoom 70.
Light efficiency will be greater than 20%.
