PREFACE
PIR 75109
This report summarizes significant items of photo intelligence
relating to the North Vietnamese railroad system which has been
developed from available photography (received by the CIA Imagery
Analysis Staff) during the period indicated on the cover. This report
is intended to provide a comprehensive view of the railroad system
and does not necessarily reflect the most recent status changes as
reported by pilots' reports or field photo intelligence cables.
The railroad system has been divided into 5 major lines: the
Hanoi/Lao Cai Line, the Hanoi/Dong Dang Line, the Hanoi/Haiphong
Line, the Hanoi/Dong Hol Line and the Thai Nguyen Line (Figure I).
Annotated maps and photos are used to show the status of each line.

The 25-span, deck-beam Ninh Binh railroad by-pass bridge has been
repaired and is now serviceable. A new railroad by-pass is under con-
struction west of the main bridge L which remains unserv-
iceable. The previously reported railroad pontoon bridge at this crossing
(Report Nos. 29 and 30) has probably been abandoned. Two new probable
railroad ferry slips, one on each side of the river, are under construction
immediately to the west of the repaired by-pass bridge.

The Haiphong railroad yard complex consists of 6 functional areas:
a 7-track, 900' long classification yard, a 3-track, 400' long classification/
holding yard, a 2-track, 2000' long passenger yard, a transloading yard,
and 2 repair areas (Figure 9).
The classification yard is approximately 70% full. A probable train
being made up extends from this area into the classification/holding yard
which is otherwise empty. The passenger terminal, platform, and tracks
appear to be inactive. The repair shops appear to be quite active - they
are apparently engaged in camouflaging rolling stock.
Approximately 157 pieces of railroad equipment are located within the
area, including 3 locomotives with tenders, 14 box cars, 29 flat cars, 8
well-type flat cars, 65 gondola cars, 30 tank cars, and 8 unidentified
cars (Figure 12). A large amount of freight is observed in the open cars,
including probable 55 gallon POL drums, construction materials, construction
machinery, transportation equipment, and coal. In addition, considerable
quantities of coal are observed in several parts of the yard.
Eight I?ken-type flat cars were also noted in the yard. This type
of rolling stock, never noted before on aerial photography in North Vietnam,
will accommodate high or bulky loads. These well-type cars are shown in
Insets 3 and 4 of Figure 12. Figure 11 is an artist's concept of one of
these cars.
