In response to your request of 10 June 1970,
is pleased to provide a firm, fixed--price proposal for a modification
to the microscope carriage motorized drive system of subject contract
line-itern 1 providing a positive means of restricting motion in the X
direction. The operation and description of this revision are detailed
in Enclosure 1 . The incorporation of this modification, which must be
authorized by you no later than 10 July 1970 to avert schedule delays,
will result in an increase to the unit price of Item 1 of =each. These
costs are detailed in Enclosure 2. ? -

MODULAR LIGHT TABLE BRIDGE LOCK REVISION
The microscope carriage motorized drive system will be modified to provide a
positive means of restricting motion in the X direction. Operation of the
bridge will be controlled by the carriage release pushbutton presently provided
for Y carriage motion and an additional release toggle switch. 'The X carriage
motion will be normally locked to operate with the motorized drive enabled
by operating the carriage joystick control. For manual. carriage motion, the
release button or release toggle switch must be actuated. X carriage motion
will be enabled when the switch is on or the button is pushed,.
To mechanize this proposed change requires replacement of the X drive clutch
with a normally engaged, electrically releasing unit. This furthermore requires
that drive limit switches be incorporated in the carriage positioning stops at
each extreme of the X excursion. In this manner, the X travel will not exceed
the preset distance for any particular viewing instrument mounted in the bridge.
Extra contacts will be added to the release pushbutton to operate the X release
function. A toggle switch will also be added to the bridge control for the
horizontal release switch.
