1. of Defense Communications Agency,
sponsored this program for the information and benefit of personnel of
DCA and other interested government agencies. This unclassified
briefing concerning facsimile transmission was held on 28 Jul 1966
at DCA and was attended by the undersigned and from 25X1
NPIC. Representatives of gave he presentation. 25X1
The meeting was concerned primarily with state-of-the-art of the various
individual components and with transmission costs and performance
trade-offs. The subjects that were covered included; input devices,
integrated circuitry, digital storage equipment, security devices,
analogue to digital converters, readout equipment and hard copy
devices.
2. Considerable progress has recently been made in the improve-
ment of high resolution input devices such as the Schade Vidicon being
developed 0 Various band width compression techniques are also
presently under development and considerable improvement and progress
has been made to date. There is promise of more improvement in the
near future, with the possibility of selective resolution for maximum
use of all facilities. High resolution readout devices such as an 18
inch thin window kinescope are under development along with dry
process hard copy output devices and materials. The 3-M dry silver
process was mentioned by the representatives as a recommended
high quality hard copy material.
2 5X1 3. L-irepresentatives were dedicated to pointing out that the
high costs of introducing integrated circuits, bandwidth compression,
selective resolution, etc., can be offset by savings in the high
costs of transmission lines. Money spent in developing and using equip-
ment to cut down on transmission time and number of transmission lines
needed, would pay off in the long run. For example, a saving of
25X1 er month does not appear to be much of a cost differential,
25X1 but this amounts tol er year for each year of use.
4. Significant advances in the various aspects of facsimile
transmission have occurred in the last few years. These improvements
are also applicable to image storage and retrieval systems. It is
now feasible to transmit secure, high resolution (1000 lines/inch),
visual information and facsimile over considerable distances at moderate
costs, provided that the volume is sufficient to justify transmission
line and terminal equipment costs.

5. It is recommended that close liaison be maintained with DCA,
NSA, etc., to keep up with the rapidly changing field of visual
communication and facsimile equipment.
