MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
DATE : 12 May 1966
PLACE:
Declass Review by NGA.
is engaged in R&D of video tape recorders
for the home use market. This company uses a simple logitudinal recording
technique zfxm (similar to magnetic tape sound recorders) rather than the
helical scan techniques of most other portable tape recorders. In this system,
the recorder/reader heads outlast helical scan heads by a factor of
(800-1000 hours), and can be easily replaced in a few minutes by the owner.
This is quite different from the helical and transverse scan heads which
require exact, time consuming alignment by skilled technical personnel. Two
basic recorders are produced by
One is a I- inch magnetic tape unit
which records on 4 tracks on the tape (back and fourth twice) and the other
is a 1 inch tape unit which records on two tracks (backward and forward).
The 2 inch tape system is used where longer recording times are necessary
(more than 2 hour). Other than the tape width differences, the two recorders
are the same.
2. Two tape speeds are utilized for recordings--120 ips and 60 ips,
depending upon the quality of recording desired. The black and white system
demonstrated at 120 ips used an 800kc-lmc band width capability whitb produced
a surprisingly good image. The 60 ips recording left a lot to be desired,
even for home recording.
3. The company is now developing a full color version using the same
basic system. A breadboarded demonstration showed that a color system is
