C. 20024 Subject: Project 635 Progress Report - May 1966 In accordance with contract provisions on the above project, we are enclosing three (3) copies of Progress Report on Project 635 for the period May 1966. Also enclosed are two (2) copies of our Financial Report for this period. Very truly yours, 25X1 25X1 Enc: (3) P.R. (2) F.R. (See April Progress Report.) Release of fabricated parts is approxi- mately 80% complete. here at A decision was made 1o fabricate the elevating table instead of subcontracting it because of the high price quotations received. The table has, consequently, been designed and is currently being detailed. 25X1 The damaged 03/26 : CIA-RDP78B047402200020032-1 Versatile Stereoscope has not yet been repaired by the manufacturer. PROBLEM AREAS Tracking Light Sources - The design problems with the high intensity tracking light sources reported previously have not been resolved. However, to prevent further delay in delivery, fabrication of the balance of the instrument is under way with the belief that the remaining design problems will be resolved during the assembly phase. Approved For Release 2004/03/26 : CIA-RDP78B04747A002200020032-1 -1- 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 /03/26 : CIA-RDP78B0474 02200020032-1 Delivery Schedule Slippage - There has been an approxi- mate 8 week slippage of the delivery date. A number of factors are responsible for this slippage from the originally planned delivery date of June 3. Prime among these is the delay caused by the design uncertainty in the type of power assist to be used. The original proposal specified a "mechanical" power assist which subsequently thought to be less suitable than the "electronic" type assist being installed on other units. Acceptance of the substitution of the "electronic" for the "mechanical" was made dependent on the successful demonstration of a similar sys- tem installed in other I manufactured equipment. This demonstration was delayed due-to technical difficulties and was made only recently. In addition, began to feel 25X1 that the electronic system, as planned, was unnecessarily complex from the operators standpoint and that a simpler improved drive system could be designed. This system was described to the customer's technical representative (see April Progress Report) and it was decided to incorporate this as a no-cost-increase change. The net result of the time consumed in coming to this final decision has been a delay in the delivery date. Of secondary importance in causing the schedule slippage Versatile Stereoscope, which is still being repaired by the manu- facturer. The microscope was received at in a 25X1 damaged and unuseable condition. Since we could not obtain dimen- sional information on the microscope from the manufacturer, we were dependent on having the actual equipment to design a compatible mount. This factor is of secondary importance only because we had an opportunity to obtain much of the essential mechanical dimensional data from the damaged equipment while it was at our plant. We will require the microscope, however, before the design can be 100% completed. Approved For Release 2004/03/26 : CIA-RDP78B04747A002200020032-1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 Approved For Release 2004 PROJECTED WORK FOR JUNE P3/26: CIA-RDP78B04747A02200020032-1 90% of the fabricated parts will be released including the elevating table which will be built ati to save 25X1 time and money. The design of the electronic section will be 75% completed. It is doubted whether any assembly of parts will be possible. SUPIMARY OF CORRESPONDENCE Meeting at 27 May 1966, between ED and During this meeting the proposed change in the 635 film drive was again discussed and the customers technical repre- sentative agreed to its inclusion as long as it would not result in a change of scope or increase the target cost. indi- 25X1 cated that it would do neither of these. indicated that 25X1 this change would be made as rapidly as possible so as not to further delay delivery. Financial Report A financial report for the month of April is enclosed. Approved For Release 2004/03/26 : CIA-RDP78B04747A002200020032-1
