R R vlo TOP SECRET CHESS RUFF MILITARY TRAINING AREA BARANOVICHI, USSR BELORUSSIAN MD 25X1A A large training area (Baranovichi Barracks and Maneuver Area Lesnaya, located 11.3 miles (18.2 kilometers) southwest of Baranovichi at 53-03N 025-47E covers ap- proximately 25,000 acres (Figure 1). The training area contains a bivouac area, an aerial gunnery range with several aircraft silhouettes, three wheeled-vehicle driver train- ing courses, one tracked-vehicle driver train' ing course, three moving target tank firing ranges, a possible vehicle-mounted automatic weapons firing range with a stationary target, 10 field artillery positions, and six. 6-gun AAA sites. Vehicle tracks crisscross the entire" area. One moving target tank firing range con- sists of two firing lanes 1,445 feet long and three target runs with a maximum distance from the static firing line to the target of 2,885 feet. The second consists of eight firing lanes, two 2,900 feet, four 2,345 feet, one 1,675 feet and one 1,845 feet, and eight target runs with a maximum distance of 4,210 feet. The third consists of four firing lanes, two 2,345 feet, one 1,675 and one 1,510 feet, and two target runs with a maximum distance of 3,650 feet. A small secured area in the eastern part of the training area covers 20 acres and con- tains four storage buildings of the following dimensions: two 200 by 50 feet, one 105 by 65 feet and one 95 by 55 feet. Four unidentified buildings ranging from 35 by 15 to 140 by 25 feet are also in the secured area. Other facilities of military significance in- clude Baranovichi SAM Site B24-2 in the south- ern section of the training area, Ammunition Storage Area Paulinava, Ammunition Storage Area Lesnaya North, and the Baranovichi Air Depot Long Range. The area is road served but not directly rail served. However, the Baranovichl-Slonim railroad is just north of the area and the Baran- ovichi-Lesnaya railroad is 1.5 kilometers southeast. _ reveals no change in the size of the train- ing area. The only change in facilities was the addition in - of a 7,700 by 500-foot dirt landing strip probably serviceable for light aircraft at the aerial gunnery range. The over- all training area appeared consistently active during the summer and fall months.
