P.I. NOTES 34/66 The mining activity near Lo-an, China (27-34N 115-53E), described in the "P.I. NOTES" issue of 18 March 1966, can be upgraded from a possible to a probable uranium mining area. Supporting collateral information acquired since that time corroborates the evidence observed on photography. The collateral report also mentions preliminary ore refining. The need for a more refined ore may be the reason for a rail- served plant under construction 4 nm north of the mines. This plant is a suspect uranium ore-processing mill. (TOP SECRET RUFF) 25X1D Comparison of CHURCH DOOR at a previously reported SCR-270 radar site located at Meng-Hsi, China (22-03N 100-15E), approximately 15 nm east of the Burma border. Most of the construction has taken place along an access road leading to the secured SCR-270 radar site. This construction includes 2 small bunkered probable buildings, each with an opening and access way at one end trapezoidal-shaped road pattern. A new loop road has been constructed functional identification of this new activity can be made at this time, although it is probably associated with the existing radar. However, a rail-served, secured installation, military in nature, is located at 49-34N 18-OlE, near Stranik. The new road intersects Route 15 at UTM WE 862857 and runs southwest along the west bank of the Rau Cai River. At UTM WE 849844 the road crosses the Rau Cai River and continues southeast along the east bank of the river, rejoining Route 15 at UTM WE 860832. At the point where the bypass road crosses the Rau Cai River (UTM WE 849844), a new bridge is in the midstage of construction. The bridge is approximately 180 feet long and 10 feet wide, with 13 probable rock-filled cribs serving as piers. The deck has not been constructed.
