YEREVAN ALUMINUM PLANT "KANAZ"
YEREVAN, USSR
The Yerevan Aluminum Plant "Kanaz'" is located in the northern
outskirts of Yerevan, USSR. This plant, new since World War U,
began initial. aluminum production in 1950 and is reportedly the ninth
largest producer of aluminum in the USSR.
The primary function of this plant is the production of aluminum
ingots from the electrolytic reduction of alumina. There is no photo-
graphic evidence of alumina production at this plant. Rolling mills
or aluminum fabrication and processing buildings are not evident on
the photography.
Electric power is supplied by the Yerevan Hydro Power Plant GES 2
"Kanake:r.'", which is located 1000 feet north of the aluminum plant.
A new industrial installation is under construction just south of
the aluminum plant. Although the function of this installation could not
be determined, it does not appear to be :related to the aluminum industry.
The major components of the Yerevan Aluminum Plant "Kanaz" are
identified and described on the following annotated photograph.

L Two pot rooms, each 1140'x 90'. Contain a series of elec-
trolytic furnaces which produce aluminum from alumina.
2. Rectifier building, approx. 400'x 501. Houses the rectifiers
and modifiers necessary for the alumina reduction process.
3. Transformer and switch gear area.
4. Probable administration and laboratory area.
5. Casting shed, 125'x 70'.
6. Alumina storage building, 360'x 80'.
7. Carbon paste plant. Two buildings, 260'x 80' and 240'x 60'.
8. Workshop area, comprising 8-10 small buildings and sheds.
9. Rail spurs, serving the plant area.
