The Kohtla-Jarve facility is the largest and most extensively developed
of the four main shale distillation plants in the Estonian
th
area. O
er
plants are covered in B-19 (Kivioli), B-21 (Slantsy), and B-22 (Ahtme).
Main operations are concentrated in an area 100 by 0.5 statute miles (sm)
which includes four (possibly five) shale oil retorting units,.a large gas-
producing Compartment Kiln installation, one power plant with three cooling towers,
an eight-tank oil storage area (capacity approximately 3 million gals.), three
gasholders each _ in diameter, and a probable brick plant.
Oil shale mined in the plant area is supplemented by two underground
operations east of the site. Total volume of the waste ash piles p located west
of the plant, is 1 to l- billion cubic feet. A new housing area 4,500' by 3,0001 of
single- and multi-story type dwellings is under development NE of facility.
The branch line from the main Tallin-Leningrad railroad to Kohtla-
Jarve and Kukruse has been extended to Johvi, providing direct rail service connecting
these three areas.
Further details of subject installation will be included in a special
report to be issued at a later date.
