JOINT PHOTOGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE BRIEF ARMY-CIA SUBJECT : Rail Facilities NO : PIC/JB-1028/60 LOCATION: Shilda, USSR DATE: 16 December 1960 COORD : 51-49N59-48E 78 MAPS OR CHARTS A.CIC. US Air Target Chart, Series 200, Sheet 0236-5A., 1st ed, Apr 60, 1:200,000 (S) A% 9% REMARKS VITAL RECUKU'"'S COPY Shilda (51-49N 59-48E) is 66 miles northeast of Orsk, on the double- track railroad leading from Orsk north to Kartaly. From Shilda a narrow- gauge railroad leads 124 kilometers in a southeast direction via A.damovka to Sovkhoz Ozernaya (51-10N 60-55E). Only a few miles of this postwar narrow-gauge railroad are visible on the photography, but it appears that its primary function is transporting agricultural products resulting from the "new lands" program. The broad-gauge rail facilities at Shilda are relatively minor. The rail yard is only four tracks wide and approximately 3,500 feet long. A. total of 121 two-axle and 45 four-axle freight cars are visible on the broad-gauge tracks. Most of these cars are in the freight terminal area. No unusual rail cars were observed. The principal rail activity at Shilda appears to be con- cerned with the transloading and storage of agricultural products. As shown on the accompanying line drawing, a small locomotive and car repair.facility is located atShilda. This facility, which serves only the nar- row-gauge railroad, includes two rail-served buildings (110 by 80 feet and 160 by 60 feet), four smaller shops, a turning wye, and probable coal and water facilities. A total of 82 freight cars, all less than 35 feet in length, were observed on the narrow-gauge tracks. Most of these cars are in the holding yard near the locomotive and car repair facility.
