After the preliminary layout work was completed, it was discovered that the optical design was not suitable for the application and was returned for re-work. A new preliminary design was submitted (see letters of Nov. 18 and Dec. 4 attached from Again a mechanical ~ayout was made and still found to be incompatible with the design. This was nbt part of the contract and was not charged to this contract, but was absorbed by The wooden mock-up of the microscope was shown to the technical repre- sentative, and although it was mechanically to thQ original concept of the contract, it was decided that from a human engineering point of view it was much too large. The working distance from the objective to the object on the high power was as originally agreed at 2", however, on the lower power the distance Due to the construction of the light table and the rrnounting facilities, we agreed to re-work the design and keep the workinig distance of the low power objective to a maximum of 4" and 1/2." minimum on the high power objective. An additional mock-up was made with these changes at our expense, and shown to the technical representative. This unit met with his approval. 25X1A 25X1A CONFIDENTIAL Approved For Release 2002/01/02 :CIA-RDP78B04747A0023000800~Y4'--~ ~ t Approved For release 2002/01/02 :CIA-RDP78B0474~TA002300080014-4 CONFIDENTIAL July 22., 1966 Page 5 or avis a ion ' Washington, D, C. ?
