1. (S/SK) MISSION: To describe the target site (Whale rescue from
North Pacific pack ice) in Stage 5 terminology.
2. (S/SK) VIEWER TASKING: Encrypted coordinates only.
3. (S/SK) COMMENTS: No Physical Inclemencies reported. This is
probably the most difficult target we have, in that it involves land which
is not land (pack ice), a structure which is not a structure (the "manmade"
here is a hole in the ice), "objects" which are alive (whales), and which
should not be found "inland" (200 miles from open sea), and people doing
things which are seemingly unrelated to the site's purpose (human activity
is that of moving squares of ice_which are cut using chain saws). The
Viewer is not expected(to resolve tT:Dis site; only to describe it. 052 gave
excellent descriptors of all-gifErelements, identifying the structure as "a
cut", the activity as "people stacking bright squares", the area as "cold,
flat land", and the objects as,"whales".7, Stage 5 performance was exemplary,
and no problems were encountered, aitside the extreme frustration naturally
generated by this site.

Veebreaker's Trip Delayed

o
California gray whales as rescuers prepared
-7, for a dangerous attempt to free them.
'7 The rescue effort, which hangs on the ar-
rival of an icebreaking barge from Prudhoe
Bay, has become a race against time. The
young whales are exhausted from fighting the
current to stay beneath gaps in the ice where
they could surface for air. At least one of the
whales may have pneumonia. Their barnacled
snouts are raw from grating on the jagged ice.
At Prudhoe Bay, about 200 miles southeast,
an Army National Guard Skycrane helicopter
was ready to hook a 185-ton icebreakirig ho-
vercraft barge owned by VECO Inc. and tow it
across the Arctic Ocean to the whales at Point
Barrow. The journey was delayed this morning
when the barge became stuck in the ice and
again late today by refueling.
The whales were hemmed in nearly two
,? weeks ago .while migrating south to the warm-
' er waters where they usually spend the win-
ter. New ice trapped them in shallow water a
few hundred feet offshore and 18 miles north-
? east of this lnupiat Eskimo village.
Once the barge is under way, the risky trip
from Prudhoe Bay to Point Barrow is expected
