Current Status of Work The following areas have been worked on during this period. 1. The influence of limiting the target to 15 bars was further investigated. The full mathematical details will be given when we have more examples worked out. We have not been able to get the results in a closed form, but for any given transfer tunction we can com- pute the influence. For representative transfer func- tions computed to date the influence is negligible. Again, when we finish our exampleSwe will give a full report. 2. The technique to align the polarizers is fully worked out and is satisfactory. 3. The modulation of the filters, up to this point, were measured on a regular microdensitometer. These instru- ments use a large cone of light which comes from the filter. The densities measured in these two ways might lead to different results due to the "Callier" effect. To ensure that the modulation measured on the filters is the one that is effective in the use of the instrument, we are building equipment to measure the filter under conditions of actual use. This equipment will be ready in about two weeks. 4. The eyepiece filter-holder has been redesigned to its final form and one unit should be ready in about two weeks. 5. The target-holder and light box is on the drafting board for final design. It should be ready for the shop in approximately one week. B. Problem Areas Encountered No problem areas were encountered during this period. C. Projected Work for Next Monthly Period 1. Work will continue in the areas described in Section a.l. a.3, a.4 and a.5. 2. Work will commence in two weeks on the second model.
