SUBJECT: Design Objective, Estimating Crop Yields
1. We have reviewed the copy of the design objective on
crop yield estimating which you provided us. We have done some
work in this field and we would like to make a suggestion. In
your background statement you mention estimating crop types, but
this subject is not brought up again in the requirement. We feel
that the identification of crops is a major problem and that this
must be solved before we make yield estimates.
2. We therefore suggest that you divide the requirement
into two parts, one asking for keys to crop indentification from
Satellite photography in a number of crop regions, and one for a
study on crop yields in these same regions. We feel that the
regional approach is extremely important, because what may be
valid for one region would not necessarily be valid for. another.
We suggest that the crop regions generally follow the following
outline:
USSR
1. Ukraine Wheat Region
2. Northwest Russian Mixed Crop Region.
3. Southwest Siberian Arid Region
4. Central Siberian Region
5. Maritime Region
China
1. Manchuria
2. North China
3. West China
4. South China
