IMPROVEMENTS TO PORT FACILITIES AT MATANZAS, CUBA
1. Major improvements to the port at Matanzas, Cuba, have been observed
underway since At this harbor, which serves an important
agricultural and industrial area, a section of wharf approximately 200 meters
(656 feet) long is being completely rebuilt, and part of the bay is being
dredged deep enough to serve 20,000-ton ships.
2. Work on the western end of the wharf was first observed on photography
of According to a Cuban publication, Dubrocq Wharf was being
rebuilt with prefabricated concrete pilings and slabs cast at the site.l When
observed on photography of (Figure 1) construction appeared to
be approximately two-thi:^dscomplete. The reconstruction of the
wharf section includes extending it approximately
farther into the bay than the original wharf. When
been completed, the entire length of the wharf will be rai_1
served a.nd a 15-ton crane wi11 be installed for loading and unloading ship
cargo. The eastern of wharf have remained unchanged
and in service during this period of construction. 25X1 D
3. Tmprovement of the port facilities also includes the dredging of the
harbor area, the dredged material being deposited behind a rock wall to prevent
resifting. The wall, southwest of the wharf, has been extended as needed and
was 335 meters (1,110 feet) long i.n -
