SA-2 SAM LAUNCH SITE NEAR SIAN, CHINA
An SA-2 SAM launch site located at 34-
40-40N 108-59-40E, 3.8 nautical miles (nm)
northeast of San-yuan and 24 nm north of Sian
(Figure 1), was identified on
photography of ~. 1/, 2/
FE1,Lnw
The site, situated in the northeast corner
of a fenced building complex at San-yuan Air-
field, is enclosed by an earth mound measuring
600 by 410 feet (Figure 2). It consists of three
open, semicircular launch positions 55 feet in
diameter, each containing a launcher and each
serviced by a perimeter road. 't'hree probable
electronics vans, a FAN SONG radar (in oper-
ation), and an L-shaped building, one leg of which
measures 90 by 30 feet and the other 60 by 25
feet also are present. The L-shaped building
probably houses equipment associated with the
FAN SONG radar. A missile transporter is
servicing the northern launch position, and an-
other missile transporter is parked immediately
outside the site.
A support area is located 2,100 feet south-
southeast of xhe launch site. It is a small,
fenced area containing one "I'-shaped building,
the bar of which measures 280 by 35 feet and the
stem 80 by 30 feet; one building 80 by 35 feet,
and one building 240 by 35 feet. Two missile
transporters are parked within this area.
Although the site was occupied and active
at the time of photography, the exact operational
role cannot be determined at this time. It
possibly functions as a training site, but it is
equally possible that it is an operational launch
site deployed for the defense of the Sian area.
The three launch positions and the FAN SONG
radar possibly indicate a deployed site utilizing
a minimum amount of equipment to gain the
maximum effect against a small number of air-
craft. The FAN SONG radar is capable of con-
trolling three missiles at a time. 3/
