1. Addressed CIA Orientation Course on Economic Intelligence and,
consequently, missed the bulk of D/CI Meeting.
2, Attended IAC Meeting. At the meeting, General Smith referred
to the National Intelligence Digest and said that he was extremely
pleased with the appearance of the.report, the art and map work, and
the generally high standards maintained. He said that he had received
the same reaction from the President and wanted particularly that those
who were responsible for its production be commended. The Director al-
so re-emphasized the need for Net Estimates stating that we had just
three alternatives: Joint G-2, G-3 Estimates; Intelligence Estimates
based on war plans; or Intelligence estimates based on hypothetical
friendly data furnished by the JCS. General Partridge raised the question
of the status of NIE-73, "Trends in the Middle East< and the General di-
rected that its pr.-or.ty be stepped up so that it be completed right after
the current Soviet papers.
