Mr. William Casey
Director of Central Intellegence
Central Intellegence Agency
Washington, DC 20505
Dear Mr. Casey,
Macmillan Publishing Co. Inc. has been producing text books for education
for over 75 years. Cassell Macmillan, a division of Macmillan Publishing
Co. Inc, publishes bilingual dictionaries primarily for both national
and international education. Today, we are researching the feasibility
of revising and expanding our bilingual dictionary product line.
As you are probably aware, this is a massive undertaking both in terms
of manpower and costs even if we can automate a portion of the process.
To neglect the necessary revisions and possibly disband the development
of new bilingual dictionaries because of economic reasons seems an
injustice to our educational community as well as further inhibiting
international relations by expanding the language (communications) gap.
We understand that the Central Intelligence Agency has already developed
computer software to automate the translation process. We would like to
know if the computer programs, word files, and translations are unclassified
information; thus, making this material candidate for public distribution?
If they are unclassified, what are the procedures for obtaining the
aforementioned material in the most expeditious manner as we would like
to make use of it?
We trust that you will treat our plea for assistance in this matter with
the understanding that it is to our mutual benefit for Macmillan to
continue and expand its line of bilingual dictionaries.
