Having just returned from three weeks in Europe I spent the last few
days catching up on my in-box. Today I came upon your letter to the
editor of the New York Times dated 24 April 1984.
Would that the rest of Washington possess the reasonableness and
logic of your letter. I apprecia a i+ m" he more because I well
recognize your opposition to the program but your letter sets
forth the way in which responsible oversight should work. I hope it's
not only a tutorial for the editor of the New York Times but a yardstick
by which all oversight should be measured.
We are grateful for your response to the New York Times and the
recognition that the oversight process, even in disagreement, can and
should recognize the protection of secret intelligence activities.
