SUBJECT . Monthly Report--Nicosia Bureau--August 1983
Events in Lebanon continued to figure prominently in the bureau's
workload during the month, due largely to the tension surrounding the imminent
Israeli redeployment, the surprise visit to Beirut of Israeli Defense Minister
Arens, and the intensive shelling of Beirut airport. Even Cyprus had an
opportunity to play a minor role in the crisis when the Lebanese Army organized
an airlift between Larnaca and Beirut to ferry Lebanese citizens stranded as a
result of the closure of the airport.
The Voice of Palestine was monitored at the bureau on 2 August for the
first time in nearly a year after going off the air following the Palestinian
evacuation from Beirut. The station, which is believed to be located in Tripoli,
Lebanon, broadcasts two 2-hour casts daily. The bureau added these casts to
regular coverage on 10 August.
A. Monitorial/Editorial
1. Regular coverage of Cairo Television from our recording site in
Limassol was suspended on 17 August following a survey that showed
the monitoring of the television on a delayed basis to be unproductive.
However, the bureau will continue to maintain its recording site in
order to monitor Cairo Television on an ad hoc basis and to enhance
our access to Egyptain media in a crisis.
2. The bureau resumed coverage of Moscow Persian and Radio Nejat-e
Iran casts on 30 August following our Persian monitor's return from
leave. On the 31st, we resumed coverage of the Turkish press following
our press monitor's return to duty.

Engineering
1. The bureau's emergency power system was given an unexic ted test
on the,18th when a local brownout in Nicosia momentarily cu off the
electricity supply. Fortunately, the emergency generator activated
instantly with virtually no interruption to the bureau's power supply.
The, brownout did, however, create some temporary communications
problems due to technical difficulties
