Approved For Release 2008/03/19: CIA-RDP86-0004OR000100230003-7 FOREIGN BROADCAST INFORMATION SERVICE KEY WEST BUREAU MAIN P.O. BOX 1056 KEY WEST, FLORIDA 33040 MFL - 3031 4 November 1983 MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, Foreign Broadcast Information Service THROUGH Chief, Operations Group SUBJECT Monthly Report Key West Bureau -- September 1983 A. Moni.tori.al/Editorial The rather length.ly period of confusion over who was actually running.the government in Grenada provided the bureau with its major excitement for the month as major consumers and the wire asked the bureau to, at first, maintain a round the clock watch, and then, 24-hour coverage of. all available media. The bureau was able to provide nearly exclusive coverage from CANA, as well as a couple of unique items from Radio Free Grenada, including the New Jewel Movement's statement on the relationship between the party, Maurice Bishop and the new collective leadership. Bish.op's death. threw the si.tuati.on into complete chaos and precipitated the joint movement of Caricom and U.S. forces into Grenada. The presence of Cubans and other foreign nationals on the island increased concern over the possibility of violent ,Cuban reaction. At this point the bureau was asked to file all pertinent material at FLASH precedence and for nearly 2 days much. of the material filed was at this level. To help the bureau cope with the increased hours and the volume of material, Operations Group sent: tele- STAT typ linguist; linguist; STAT andit? e itor; to Key West. These individuals, STAT exhibiting the highest level of professional competence, moved right in and began to carry out their duties like old "conchs." All of us at the bureau would like to thank them for their willingness and ability to help out. The 24-hour coverage of Caribbean media continued through the end of the month into November. B. Communications Radio Free Grenada went off the air during the Caricom/ U.S. incursion into Grenada and so far neither the Government of Grenada nor any private enterprise has put a transmitter on the air with. sufficient power to be heard in Grenada.? C. Lateral Services During the height of the crisis several (6) new consumers were added on a temporary basis because of their need to be kept aware of tR developments in the Caribbean. They have since been dropped. Approved For Release 2008/03/19: CIA-RDP86-0004OR000100230003-7 Approved For Release 2008/03/19: CIA-RDP86-0004OR000100230003-7 D.
