I. GENERAL
Bomb Threat -- On 9 August a caller warned the consulate Marine guard
that a time delay bomb had been planted in the Immigration and Naturalization
Service office on the 57th floor of Hopewell Centre. The entire floor,
including the bureau, was searched with negative results.
Survey Team -- A State Department wage and classification survey team vl~
arrived in Hong Kong on 13 August. The team will conduct a full wage
survey and look into certain local benefits offered by private companies
and the Hong Kong Government, particularly housing, which could impact on
consulate practices.
Bureau Move -- The chief, deputy and local technician met with six
architect firms during the month to discuss floor layouts for the new premises
in The architects are due to present their proposals
to the consulate the first week in September. Work has started on con-
struction of new furniture and carpeting has been selected for the new
office space.
II. OPERATIONS
Monitorial/Editorial
Philippines Coverage -- The 21 August slaying of Philippine opposition
leader Acquino, while receiving widespread world attention, had little
impact on the bureau's Philippine coverage, no doubt attributable to tight
government control of the central media. The bureau's wordage dropped
10,000 words from the average 32,000 filed monthly.
