thanks to the Paraguay Bureau. also thanked London STAT
Bureau staff for their support and cooperation throughout the
crisis.
B. Visitors to the Monitorin Service who received orientation at
the dish antenna included BBC Director General- STAT
Designate (7 June) an of the Foreign and STAT
Commonwealth Office (1 June).
A. Editorial/Monitorial
1. In June the BBC issued its long-awaited rationalization of
Moscow domestic radio coverage under which regular repeat
programs will no longer be checked. They will be recorded
on the Racal Autostore and periodically checked to ensure
the repeat pattern remains constant. This measure has freed
sufficient monitorial time so that the BBC on 12 June assumed
regular daily coverage of the Moscow Domestic Television 1300
Vremya program. For most of the month the BBC also took
the daily 1700 Vremya during our monitor's annual leave,
finding both programs highly productive.
2. The end of the Falklands crisis also contributed to the
bureau's expanding coverage of Soviet television, enabling
us to drop virtually all of the local English-language TV
news programs and take on Moscow TV's "The World Today" casts,
twice daily, Monday through Friday. It also enabled bureau
editors to cease monitoring British Radio 4- for Falklands
crisis material, a noble effort but very time consuming.

3. TASS International Service in Russian was out for a period of
nine days 21-30 June, a matter of rising concern to the BBC and
to us. This outage was apparently caused by a conjunction of
UPI and TASS errors on the Helsinki-Stockholm link of the TASS
4. The Israeli invasion of Lebanon occasioned the usual flood of
material that accompanies a war, primaril affecting the bureau
by giving our Middle East report writers,
the immense task of assimilating and refining
the multitude of contradictory views broadcast by all sides.
The Daily Report has commended them for their well-organized,
edited and balanced wrapups.
5. PMU filed at short notice some 30,000 words of Soviet leader
speeches in time to meet a Trends deadline. AG expressed
appreciation for the "monumental effort."
6. Receipts of Lebanese papers (if they are still appearing) were
suspended with the closure of Beirut airport.
B. Communications
1. A second Telex terminal was installed on 17 June on very short
notice when Paraguay Bureau developed commo problems at the
height of the Falklands crisis. The second terminal will be
useful in handling Middle East bureaus' copy during
outages.
2. Incoming traffic increased by approximately 30?%o during the
month, mainly due to the Middle East crisis. This placed a
heavy burden on the shortstaffed Communications Unit.
C. Technical
1. A more up-to-date modem has been fitted to the
circuit.
2. We now have a comprehensive stock of Extel spare parts for the
B315, B405 and AH RO machines.
