7 June 1982
NF,MORANDUM FOR: Director, Foreign Broadcast Information Serivice
THROUGH Chief, Operations Group
SUBJECT Key West Bureau -- Monthly Report -- Max 1982
A) The Navy has begun holding planning meetings for
tenants in preparation for the 1982 hurricane season which
begins on 1 June. The bureau, of course, participates in
this preparation and uses Naval evacuation facilities when
necessary.
B) Operation Ocean Venture '82 ended on 15.May and the
bureau was relieved of the ad hoc services it had been pro-
viding during the period of the military maneuvers. (See
April Report for description of these services.)
C) It appears the bureau may have won its effort to
forestall the construction of a road through a portion of
its antenna field. Although it has been impossible to get
a final statement from Naval personnel as yet, it has been
learned that Admiral McKenzie--for whom the road extension
was to be built--is retiring during the month of June. Thus
the pressure for completion of this project may be gone.
A. Monitorial/Editorial
The major ongoing problem continues to be the lack of a
sufficient number of staff personnel. Scheduling has to be
very creative at times in order to provide for the trans-
portation and security problems presented by the present
arrangement.
1) After significant review and pruning of services
it was possible to resume service to COMUSFORCARIB by the
end of May.
2) Ad hoc lateral services in support of Operation
Ocean Venture '82 ended midmonth and both.th.e PSYOPS Group
and the local J-2 were effusive in their praise and appre-
ciation for the cooperation extended to them during the
maneuvers.
