MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, FBIS
THROUGH : Chief, Operations Group
SUBJECT : Monthly Report -- Austrian Bureau -- August 1982
i/A. Monitorial/Editorial
1. In response to requirements outlined by Chief/Operations,
we sought and received the Acting Chief of Mission's approval
to add two Russian positions to our. T/O. The.two additional
translators will initially be given a limited press coverage
mission relating to the Soviet leadership issue.
2. To provide more timely and complete processing of speeches
and articles by Soviet leaders, the bureau agreed to a
proposal by Chief/Operations that we resume responsib_ilitv
for translating any items by Vladimir Shcherbitskiy,
Politburo member and first secretary of the Ukraine, that
might appear in the Kiev press. In future, we will also fax
the table of contents of the Soviet theoretical journal
KOMMUNIST to the PMU as soon as we receive it.
3. The bureau began subscription in mid-month to the Warsaw
paper RZECZYWISTOC (Reality), a weekly that was originally
published as a counter to the Solidarity newspaper
SOLIDARNOSC and which is now reappearing for the first time
since martial law was declared last December.
8.' Technical
We received our long-awaited second NEFAX facsimile machine
this month, giving us a much needed backup fax capability,
since there are no service reps here in Vienna.

Senior Editor boarded an early STAT
morning flight on 9 July en route to.London and then on to
the States for home leave before taking over as Tel Aviv
deputy chief in August.
2. It was good news on the recruitment front this month as
we moved closer to filling several our vacant Positions.
First of all, our Polish candidate STAT
passed her field security and medical checks and must now
just decide when she wants to EOD. Secondly, our Yugoslav
candidate -is scheduled to visit us early STAT
in August before being interviewed by the embassy's security
people. Now that she is finally in Vienna, we are hoping
for a quick security check so we can bring her aboard as
soon as possible. Finally, we have selected a local 24-year
old technical school graduate -as th(STAT
replacement for who retires in January. STAT
will now also have to queue up for his local sec1STAT'
B. Building and Grounds
The tech's workroom on the third floor took on a new appear-
ance as we completed the first stage of our technical re-
novations by installing a professional work bench and a set
of floor-to-ceiling drawers to hold inhous(STAT
