Raised the question of sending a message to our overseas stat_oa; requesting their personal views on the fall of U. S. prestige, and after some discussion it was agreed that this message would be sent by cable to the major stations and ~to other areas selected by DDjF. It was also agreed that the replies should be in Headquarters not later tiu.an 2L- August, at which time the CIA Board of National Estimates would under- take to prepare a round-up based on these replies and other material at hand. d. Reported that Commander Gough of the American Legion had not in fact been specifically charged by the President to look into U. S. overseas information programs and psychological warfare efforts, but rather had been asked to "keep his eyes and ears open" respecting; these programs during his forthcoming trip to Europe, and therefore it was not contemplated to give him a detailed briefing as originally proposed. Mr. Amory said that in all probability an invitation for a briefing; had already been extended to Gough, however, in view of the above iniorma-Lio it would be a very low-level one. 25X1 25X1 Mr. Kirkpatrick: Reported that was going to South America next week or: a month's trip and had offered his services if needed. a.
