I wish to express my deep appreciation-for the" role-of
the ministry of Finance and the Customs Service of the Federal
Republic of Germany in the detention on November 9, in Hamburg,
Germany of electronic and computer equipment en route to the
Soviet Union in violation of U.S. law. The United States
Government is deeply indebted for the prompt and decisive
actions taken by your personnel that resulted in the inter-
ception of this shipment of critical technology.
The United States Customs Service has advised me of the
outstanding cooperation that its Attache Office in Bonn
receives on a daily basis from the Ministry of Finance and
from the Customs Service of the Federal Republic of Germany
in a wide variety of investigations concerning matters of
mutual interest. The U.S. Treasury Department and the U.S.
Customs Service are deeply appreciative of this relationship
and will make every effort to continue this excellent spirit
of cooperation.
Please extend my personal thanks to your personnel who
participated in the action leading to the confiscation of
the equipment in Hamburg. They are to be congratulated for
their dedication and initiative.
