On 7 June 30 x 155 mm' long range guns2 of Soviet manufacture arrived in Canton by special train from Hankaw. Immediately 12 of these guns were sent to Human (113 1., 2219), Yaimen (113 p22m , Chungshan (113,-36, 22.22)9 Santsao (113- q22- ), and Wanshan: (13.3- 921 ) a Other guns were sent to Swatow, Hsiying (110-24$ 2111)9 and Yulin (109-314 18-13)- 2. Since early May the Chinese Communist military authorities in Kwangtux)g have been sending small groups of technical experts to inspect the defenses of the islands at the mouth of the Pearl Rivera They are attempting to replace the small calibre guns on the islands with heavy guns of Soviet manufacture. Between 7 and 11 May 8 heavy guns of Soviet manufacture and 100 boxes of ammunition for them arrived in the islands from `hampoao On 15 June a Chinese Communist vessel sailed from Whampoa to Santsao Island with two long range coastal artillery pieces and three anti-aircraft gunea Four Soviet technicians accompanied the shipment. On 8 June 500 drums of gasoline and 900 sets of truck tires (600 were 6 x 35, and 300 were 7 x Sts) were sent north from Canton. All this materiel had been shipped to Canton from Macao. 5a On 11 June five thousand l2O.pound bags of rice arrived in Canton via the Canton411ankcw railroad. They were stored in the Kwangtung Provincial Bank Building on Hsi Hu (` ?SA ) Roadq Canton.
