There is a special detachment of CHIANG Ching4kuo?s Political Department
on Yenping Road, Taipei, in a building which appears to be a shop but
displays no sign or business noticed Its functions include the investi-
gation of suspected Communist activities, Several members are investigating
the Communists who surrendered to the Nationalist Government in the fall
1950 amnesty; others are engaged in work unknown even to their colleagues.
Members of the detachment frequently visit Hong Kong and Macao, for one-
month periods.
CHEN Hain-sa (also known as CHEN Kwan-shih), whose attempted assassination
occurred in Hong Kong on 30 January,* was formerly connected with
Nationalist intelligence activities in Kwanl tong. CHEN had been removed
from his post because his v ork was too yell known to the Communists.
Nationalist officials believe the attempt on CHENs life was made because
of his former position.
The South China Morning Post of 31 January reported
that CHIN had been shot but was in fair condition.
