1Q On 6 September the 1, 2, and 5 Regiments of the Kwangtung-Kwangsi Column
were sent to the Wukueiehan ( , ji ) area to mop up LIAI Kuan?s troops
who had defected and were hiding. The rebels were driven to Toumen (i fJ
Chungshaans 20 were taken prisoner and about 30 killed or wounded. On
19 September L A,4G Kuan had 300 troops in the Huangyangshan( 1 aLt ) and
liotoushaan (J Ji ) areas and had joined up with guerrillas.
2. On 18 and 19 September Nationdist coastal patrol escorts shelled Ch'iao
(113-38, 22-24) Island and prevented the garrison from joining the seige
of Wukueishan. The warsl ips also prevented elements of the 4 Field Army
on Bocca Tigris and V aip' ing from crossing the Pearl River
and joining the seige,,
3o On 26 September elements of the Kwangtung-Kwaangsi Column in the Wukueishan
area were rounding; up all persons of military age.
4, LIANG Kuan is reported to have contacted Taiwan for help. Big deputies at
Wukueishaan are KM Li ( .4 , ) and KAaN Ming (`d of ) LLUG has
also been reported in Aacao where he was attempting to contact guerrilla
leaders to join forces against the Go_=nani.sts. Twenty of his men were In
the Chinese hospital in Macao.
5~ In early October elements of the Kwangtung-Kwafgsi Colurn and an artillery
unit of the 44 Army succeeded in dislodging 250 troops, who fled from
Wukueishan to tl:e S District of Chungshan.

defected from the Communists in Chungshan, and they were all in the
WWukueishan area in aarly October.
7m On 24 September the 3 Company, 7 Independent Columnn, Central Kwangtung
Column, defected and fled to Lienshan ( )rind Fautzuao (/; ~! )

Sa on 30 September WU Tang-hung 4~),, commander of a public security
regiment in Chungshan, and his entire regiment defected. They are now in
the Wukueisban area and have joined forces 6ith LIAi'G Kuan.
9. Ou 4 October 100 of LIANG "s troops raided a rice storage at P' of ouhsiang
k;_? ) , Chungahan. The 2. 4j, and 5 Regiments of the I~rangtu--
Kwangsi Column attempted to intercept them.

Comment. A Chinese Communist press report of 7.7 October states
that LIA:IG,Kuan, a former Communist guerrilla leader who had revolted
against the Communist regime a little more than a month before in Chungshan,
bad unexpectedly surrendered to the Communists again. Communist troops
sent to suppress the revolt cut off LI!'NGAs contact with outside aid and
he was forced to accept the Communist terms for a political settlement.
