OF ENC (LISTED BELOW) The south section of the former Clark Adam Square (present name not known) was partitioned off and elaborate tunneling protects i .tiated late in the fail of 1950. The Square is located between the Chain Bridge a ad the Buda Tunnel, and is tangent to the base of the hill on which the Var (Fortress Palace) stands. Both dad and night shifts have been at work on, this protect. A small railroad track leads into a tunnel bored into the hill ide and si a2l cars are used to remove excavated material. .his material is not stored about the project site but is quickly hauled away by track. 2. Many old tunnels dating from Raman and '&rtish times have be .n cleaned out and made suitable for air--raid halters. The site of these tunnels is close to the place where the Germans had an under ?ound hospital during the least war. 3. On the west side of the Var, along V ralta Street, are two tunnels ooa:dng into the Var Hill.. Considerable excavatio a aired at enlarging these was in progress dur iaag March and April of 1951. The walls of the Var are being, redesigned in several places -ad. th the i-at ation of reducing entrances to the Var area to a mirki rum. Along certain portions of tho west wall., gardens which were started centuries ago, an. i have gradua.Uy been built up to the top of the stone wall, have been removed. At these points the Var wall is about forty feet high. J Within the palace grounds on Szent Square considerable dig ~g has been in progress. From the sounds emana ing from this a 'eaa$ it appears that a pneumatic drill is being employed. Several wooden structures have been observed along the lower slope of the hill, It is quits likely these could be forms for concrete pourings,, inv. buildings or sheds- for housing of personnel or equip sent.
