1? Beginning on 2 July Chinese Communist authorities in Shanghai began
conducting an intensive campaign to recruit middle school and college
students for training in military cadre schools. By 13 July 5,800 students,
mostly from middle schools, had applied for entrance to these cadre schools.
2. Military authorities in south Anhwei axe recruiting college and middle
school as rowll as some primary school students in Kuangte (219-23, 30-55)
and Langch v i (119-Ws, 31-07) for the army. Began, late June and 13 July,
about 302 students had joined the aimy from Kuangte.
3. On 9 Jody 3,872 militiamen arrived in Sanyuanli (~. ids I. ) on the
northern suburbs of Canton, and will soon be sent to H mikow as replacements
for 4 Field Army units.1 The militiamen were recruited as follows 460
from the North River area, 500 from Swatow, 540 from central Kwangtang,
118 from the Pearl River area, 378 from Ueihsien (116-13, 21r-18), 480 from
the West River area, and 592 from L3uehou.
1. Comment. According to a report from another agency, 30,000
MCI% from central Kwangtung have been aa..embled in Canton for
military training. These troops will be under the control of the I:Zi Army,
and upon completion of their training in early fall, they will be
assigned as needed to combat units.
